Frequently asked questions
Are the calculations accurate?
SalarySnap uses officially published HMRC rates for the current tax year (2026/27). We update rates promptly each April. However, tax rules are complex and may not account for every individual circumstance. For specific advice, please consult a qualified accountant or tax adviser.
Why does my result differ from HMRC's calculator?
HMRC's tax calculator does not distinguish between pension types. If you use salary sacrifice, SalarySnap correctly accounts for National Insurance savings that HMRC's tool doesn't model, meaning your actual take-home is higher than HMRC shows.
Is my data safe?
Yes. SalarySnap processes everything on your device. No data is sent to any server. We don't have accounts, analytics, or tracking of any kind. Your salary information never leaves your phone. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
What's included in the free version?
The core salary calculator, net-to-gross reverse mode, Scottish tax rates, all deduction types (income tax, NI, student loans, pension, child benefit), salary comparison, percentile ranking, fiscal drag calculator, tax efficiency score, smart threshold alerts, Home Screen widgets, Siri Shortcuts, and dark mode. All free, with no ads, forever.
What does Pro include?
Pro unlocks seven additional tools: Payslip Checker, Pension Optimiser, £100k Tax Trap Visualiser, Bonus Calculator, Salary Sacrifice Simulator, Cost of Living Comparison, and Tax Year Comparison. It also adds enhanced salary comparison (with bonuses and employer pension match) and PDF/CSV export from any screen.
How much does Pro cost?
Pro is available as an annual subscription at £7.99 per year or a one-time lifetime purchase at £19.99. New users get 14 days of full Pro access free, starting at first launch, with no payment details required and nothing to cancel.
How does the free trial work?
You don't need to start it. Your 14-day trial begins automatically the first time you open SalarySnap, and every Pro feature is unlocked from the start. There's no payment method to add and nothing to cancel, so you're never charged when it ends. The Pro card in Settings shows how many days you have left, and the calculator reminds you in the final three days. When the trial ends, everything in the free version keeps working and the Pro tools lock until you upgrade.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Go to Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions on your iPhone. Find SalarySnap and tap Cancel Subscription. Your Pro access will continue until the end of the current billing period. Apple does not provide refunds for partial subscription periods.
I purchased the lifetime option. How do I restore it?
Open SalarySnap and go to the Settings tab. Tap the Pro card at the top of the list, then tap "See all plans". Scroll to the bottom of that screen and tap "Restore Purchases". Your lifetime access will be restored as long as you're signed in with the same Apple Account you used for the original purchase.
Does SalarySnap support Scottish tax rates?
Yes. All six Scottish income tax bands are fully supported. You can select your tax region per calculation and per comparison.
Which student loan plans are supported?
Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4, Plan 5, and Postgraduate Loan, all with accurate 2026/27 thresholds and repayment rates.
How does the Payslip Checker work?
Payslip Checker is a Pro feature. Open the Payslip Check tab and choose how to add your payslip: photograph it with your camera, pick an image from your photo library, import a PDF or image from Files, or type the figures in yourself. SalarySnap uses Apple's on-device Vision framework to read the numbers, and on supported devices Apple's on-device model fills any gaps it cannot place. It then compares the figures against what HMRC rules say you should have been paid for that tax year. Anything that looks off is flagged with a plain-English explanation of the likely cause, such as an emergency tax code or a pension applied to basic pay only, and you can export the audit as a PDF or CSV. All processing happens on your device.
When will the app be updated for the new tax year?
We aim to update HMRC rates within the first week of each new tax year (early April). The app clearly shows which tax year's rates are being used in every calculation.
